The Lisbon Castle has been a major tourist attraction in the city for quite a while now; let’s take a look at its history and more.
History
According to historians, this castle has been standing for about 400 years now, with the recent renovations being done in the 1920s. The castle also went through many natural disasters, including the earthquake in 1755, which destroyed it for good.
Architecture
You can distinctly notice the two parts of the castle, the Royal Palace, and the Moorish Castle, both built in between the 12th to the 14th century. After the earthquake in 1755 took away most of the walls, the government renovated it in the 1920s.
When to go
Starting your day off with the castle is a smart idea as the queues and ticket lines can get long in the afternoon. Most Portugal Lisbon hotels will have details on when the internal tours of the castle will take place, and you can, therefore, plan your trip accordingly, before you step out of your Tivoli Oriente Lisboa Hotel, for instance.
The view
The castle fort overlooks the city of Lisbon and makes for an amazing view during a cloudless, sunny day.
