Location
Located in Selangor, roughly 13km away from Kuala Lumpur, the Batu Caves is a shrine devoted to the Hindu deity Murugan. Set by the Batu River, this temple complex towers around 100 metres above the ground and has three main caves.
History
The caves themselves are considered to be over 400 million years old and were transformed into a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai in the late 19th Century. The main site which is known as the Temple Cave can be accessed via 272 steps which bring visitors to an area that is characterised by its high ceiling and intricate Hindu shrines.

When exploring the area look to head to the Museum Cave and the Art Gallery Cave which can be found at the bottom of the site. Also of note is the Ramayana Cave where visitors will find a statue of Hanuman standing proudly at a height of around 15 metres, while one can also learn more about the story of Rama.
