Sri Lanka is one awesome country that’s got quite a lot packed in. 1. Galle
One word- awesome! Galle is a quaint old city that was once fortified by the Dutch and Portuguese colonists. Their influence here is so strong that some options for accommodation in Galle the likes of those by Yoho Bed, come in the form of villas and hotels built according to the colonial style. The biggest attraction of the city is the magnificent Dutch Fort that’s 400 years old and been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gorgeous beaches and turtle hatcheries follow soon after this.
2. Ella
The mountains of Ella are calling! This heavenly destination is nestled within the central highlands of Sri Lanka a good five hours away. The journey’s totally worth it though, for the travel to the town itself involves an exhilarating train ride that winds its way across mountains and lush sceneries. Once you’re up there you get to do a whole lot of exciting things such as hiking, trekking and exploring a range of beautiful waterfalls such as the Bomburu Ella Falls.
3. Arugam Bay
What’s a backpacking holiday without surfing? This is where you can get some serious surfing done in Sri Lanka, for it’s a surfer’s paradise. Located on the East Coast of the island, the stunning Arugam Bay is home to spectacular surf breaks like the Peanut Farm, Whiskey Point, Pottuvil Point and Elephant Rock, to name a few.
4. Dambulla: Sigiriya & Kaudulla
There’s a lot of amazing things that you can explore when in Dambulla cause the spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Kaudulla National Park that’s home to Sri Lankan elephants and more wildlife; are within easy distance to it. In Dambulla itself, you can find the majestic Golden Temple, so it’s a 3 in 1 package!
