1) The City
With the earliest recorded occupation in 760 B.C., the settlement here grew to cover a 25-30-hectare area that was residential in nature. Within the following century, the settlement had already added on city walls as well as a harbour.
2) Legendary Foundation
According to legend, the city of Carthage was founded by a queen of the Phoenician city of Tyre named Elissa. Upon her father’s death, both she and her brother ascended the throne. With this not working out in an ideal manner, Elissa left the city along with a small group of settlers.
3) Punic Wars
History records a total of three ‘Punic Wars’ between Carthage and Rome. This ultimately led to the fall and destruction of Carthage as well as its re-founding. 4) Roman Carthage
After the fall of Carthage in the war, Julius Caesar founded a new Roman city in its place by the second century A.D. which was known to be the largest North African city to the west of Egypt. Researchers note that the presence of massive public baths there was a clear indication of the city’s success.
