One of Colombo’s most popular hang-out spots, Viharamahadevi Park is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you haven’t been to this park before, here are some things you should know.
Getting There
The park can be found in front of what is known as the Town Hall building and is within a 10 minute drive from the up and coming TRI-ZEN apartments. Close by is the National Museum and the well-known ODEL department store.
A Bit of Back Story
While today the park is surrounded by retail hubs, corporate offices and new apartment projects in Colombo, it actually dates back to British colonial times. It was initially known as Victoria Park after Queen Victoria though was subsequently renamed as “Viharamahadevi” after a local queen who was also the mother of Sri Lankan King Dutugamunu.
A Place for Relaxation
The largest park in the city, Viharamahadevi Park features large open spaces with lush lawns, paved pathways and trees offering plenty of shade. A popular place for couples and families alike, the site has a large Buddha statue, some water fountains, a suspension bridge over a lake and charming huts where you can relax.
Fun Recreation
The active type can enjoy jogging, while there are tracks for cycling too. Kids are bound to love playing at one of the playgrounds here or going on pony rides. Come night, the area is lit up making it quite an enchanting place indeed.
