Designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass and constructed by lWilliam Douglass, the Dondra Light House is an offshore Lighthouse operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Also known to be the highest lighthouse in Asia standing at 161ft, a Sri Lanka beach resort would be the ideal choice of lodging to explore this beauty and Ranna 212 is one of the most ideal Tangalle hotels that could accommodate the visit. The Dondra Lighthouse built during the colonial times is a spectacular sigt even at a distance and stands at the southernmost tip of the country. The lighthouse consists of 14 two panel yellow hued windows, 7 floors and also 196 steps to the very top. It is said that all the building material for this colossal structure including steel and bricks has been imported from England. Despite its age, the lighthouse is still in top notch condition, guiding boats and ships away from the rocky shores. However, it is strictly prohibited to climb up to the lighthouse unless special permission has been obtained from the Port Authority of Sri Lanka.
