Kandy is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque cities in Sri Lanka; the city is surrounded by mountains and lush green forest reserves make this a popular hiking destination in the country.

The City and its Surrounding

The city is surrounded by two of the most beautiful mountain ranges of Sri Lanka. The two are namely, the Knuckles and the Hantana mountain ranges. Among them, the range that is located closer to Kandy and easily accessible is the Hantana Mountain Range.

The Hantana range

Located very close to Kandy; the range is home to some of the rare and endemic flora and fauna species of Sri Lanka and this is one of the most protected reserves in Sri Lanka. Visiting here is a must when you plan your stay in Kandy. You can find someone of the best Kandy hotel in Sri Lanka in this region – the Earl’s Regency and you can plan a hike from the hotel itself. The mountain range is a popular hiking spot among the youth of Sri Lanka. Hanthana is an easily accessible by foot as it has less vegetation and it has more pathways which make the hike easier.

You can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Kandy town form Hantana’s summit and you can also explore the montane grass landscape which is also very similar to that of the Horton Plains. Always remember that these are protected wildlife reserves. Enjoy its beauty without harming Mother Nature. Avoid taking polythene with you and never leave take flammable substances with you on your hike. Do not to harm animals or destroy and plant life.
