The phenomena
The natural phenomena take place when seawater rushes through a submerged cavern and is pushed upwards in the air with great force, often reaching a height of 25 to 90 meters.
Location
The Hummanaya Blow Hole is located in a tiny little coastal village by the name of Kudawella in the southern province of Sri Lanka, in the vicinity of Matara and Dickwella. It can also be visited easily by travellers staying in hotels in Mirissa including the likes of Esprit d’ici Hotel with minimum hassle.
Things to do
Apart from taking in the fantastic gushes of sea spray accompanied by whooshing sounds which can be heard a mile away, one can visit a small museum dedicated to marine life. Sampling spicy street food such as fried fish and pickled fruits sold by vendors around the site too is a great idea.
Tips to remember while visiting
If your travelling with children, make sure to keep a close eye on them as the area is filled with rocky crevasses. Do remember to wear lots of sunscreen lotion, a hat and sunglasses for protection from the scorching sun. Keeping a handy bottle of water with you would be a recommended as well.
