The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse Theater was built with the support from the Chinese Government. Opened on 15 December 2011, it is one of Colombo’s most sought after venues for theatrical and musical performances.
Location
The Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) Theater is located in one of Colombo’s elite areas. It is down Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha and opposite the Vihara Maha Devi Park. Inspiration and design
The inspiration for the Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) Theater design came from the 12 century Nelum Pokuna in Polonnaruwa. Shaped like an eight petalled, stylised lotus flower this pond was built by King Parakramabahu the Great.
Features, Facilities and Services
The theatre is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for producing large theater productions. The floor area is 14,000 square feet in extent and has a seating capacitiy of 1,288 seats. It has two venues for performances. They are the main auditorium with a 690 square foot moving stage and an outdoor amphitheater. The front steps are convertible to a stage if necessary. The orchestra pit in the auditorium stage can be moved up to stage level or lowered below it. Other facilities include a library, training, educational and research facilities.
Noteworthy Events
This was the venue for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of State meeting in December, 2013.
