The National Museum in Colombo is taken care of by the Department of National Museum in Sri Lanka and is home to many prominent artefacts.
As soon as you walk into the museum, a huge Buddha made of stone smiles down at you. Throughout the museum, you can find galleries and displays dedicated to different decades, dating back to 1877. Everything from guns to swords, carvings, and statues can be found here.
The original versions of the beautiful Sri Lankan paintings you see at a typical Colombo city hotel can be seen at the museum too. If your trip to Colombo is going to be followed by visiting Kandy and the ancient cities that surround it, you can gain immense historical knowledge and many a fun fact at the museum about the places before the trip.
Surrounded by lush green lawns and open spaces, the outside of the museum is a lovely place to be in too and is a short drive away if you are staying at a hotel like Cinnamon Red Colombo, for instance.
The grounds provide ample shade with a good number of banyan trees and if you feel like snacking after a thorough history lesson inside the museum, there is also a cafe on the grounds.
