Stuck in an office, school or at home and dreaming of a perfect getaway? A place where you can just sit back in the sand, soak up the sun and frolic to your heart’s content in the surf. A place where you can pledge your love eternal or reconnect and rekindle romance. A place where life goes on at an unhurried pace far away from the frenzy of modern living. If you just let out a sigh and truly wish you were at such a place, then it’s time to start planning your holiday! When doing so definitely consider Sri Lanka for this tropical island has some of the best beaches on the planet.

Being an island there are many such idyllic coastal hideaways to choose from. The South Coast is one of the most popular spots for beachside escapes in Sri Lanka. Down South hotels located right on the beach are an obvious choice if you are planning to spend your days lazing by the shore. When it comes to the southern coast, one of the best beaches to visit is undoubtedly Unawatuna. Surrounded by a pristine bay, this shoreline that is in the shape of a horseshoe is known for its chilled-out beach vibe, perfect for unwinding on the sand and working on that holiday tan.

Another popular beach is the one at Ahungalla. Hotels along the shore like Heritance Ahungalla let you easily access this relatively secluded, long stretch of beach where you can enjoy romantic walks and come evening, some truly spectacular sunsets.

For even more breathtaking beachside sunsets, make sure to visit the West Coast. Negombo, once a sleepy fishing village is now one of the hottest beach destinations in the island. Golden sands, palm-fringed shores and a chance to engage in water sports are all on offer here.

If you love surfing, then do head to Arugam Bay. Apart from a pristine beach area, this getaway along the southeast coast also offers some amazing waves for surfing as well. Considered by many as Sri Lanka’s best surfing area, Arugam Bay is very popular with surfers from around the world and is worth checking out.

Head further North from Arugam Bay and you will come to the East Coast which has its own unique beaches. Passikuda Beach is one of the most well-known here and this picturesque shoreline offers the ideal place to just relax and enjoy long swims in relatively shallow waters. Best of all, come daybreak, you have the perfect vantage point to witness the majesty of an awe-inspiring sunrise.
