The sovereign country of Myanmar, alternatively known as Burma, is a developing country that as a result has a bounty of wonders to offer in terms of wild-life and ecological sanctuaries. Myanmar has wild-life ranging from Leopards to even Rhinos in the more northern areas. Tourism has been steadily increasing due to the increase in awareness of Myanmar’s natural wonders and the development of attractions such as Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon, a popular hotel Yangon has to offer.
Yangon is one of the major cities in Myanmar and has various attractions in store for her visitors, but one that is surely worthy of a mention is the Taukkyan War Cemetery.
Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Taukkyan War Cemetery is a massive memorial built to commemorate the memories of soldiers who gave their lives during the second World War, although there are a few graves of notable soldiers from the first world war as well.
The graves of soldiers who perished in the second world war amount to 6,374 and those of whom that died in the first world war are 52. Around eight hundred of the graves of soldiers from the second world war contain unidentified remains.
The memorial is split into three distinct sections, the first is the Rangoon Memorial, containing the names of over 27,000 Commonwealth soldiers that perished in Burma who have no known grave. The second is the Cremation Memorial containing the names of over a thousand soldiers whose faith required their remains to be cremated. Lastly is the Taukkyan Memorial housing the graves of just under fifty servicemen who were buried elsewhere but their graves couldn’t be maintained.
The Taukkyan War memorial is a very short distance away from the International Airport so if you find yourself in Myanmar, be sure to visit this historical site.
