The Hummanaya or Kudawella blowhole is located in a small fishing village on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka.
Hummanaya can be reached after passing the Matara and Dikwella towns. It’s located 1 kilometre away from Kudawella. From this point, it will take you about an hour of trekking along the newly constructed shallow steps to reach it.
The Blow Hole
Hummanaya which is believed to be the second largest blowhole in the world reaches up to 20- 30 meters in height (especially during the monsoon seasons) with a strong humming sound that can be heard once in every 10 – 15 minutes. Those who are based at one of the best boutique hotels in Sri Lanka or luxury establishments the likes of Soul Resorts can make a trip to Kudawella and visit the Hummanaya.
Along the way, you’ll come across small vendors selling delicious and freshly prepared batter-fried fish, batter-fried seafood strung together on ekels, exotic juices and more that you should definitely give a try!
Dondra Lighthouse which is located on the southernmost tip of the island is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and almost an hour drive from Hummanaya, so a visit would be great. While you are there explore the beauty of this spectacular site and the crystal clear beach surrounding it.
