An iconic sight for both visitors and residents alike, this has become one of the most visited statues in the world. The Statue of Liberty is an icon of freedom and was designed by Bartholdi back in the late 1800s. This UNESCO World Heritage Site easily accessible from any Manhattan NYC hotel, and popular hotels on Fifth Avenue, like the Hotel Central Park Fifth Avenue New York among others.
History
The idea for the Statue of Liberty was first put forward by Edouard Rene de Laboulaye, the president of the French Anti-Slavery Society, to Frederic Bartholdi, a sculptor who then designed the monument.
Design
The sole motive of the statue was to showcase the idea of American liberty and freedom and as the earlier American history used to females as cultural symbols, one of them being Liberta, the goddess of freedom, widely worshipped in the ancient Roman culture.
Opening
A massive ceremony of dedication was held on the 28th of October, 1886 and President Grover Cleveland did the opening. Following a parade in New York City that morning, close to a million people stood transfixed, as the President went on a yacht to the island and unveiled the statue to the mighty applause of throngs of people who watched history being made.
