Thu Bon River is a river running along central Vietnam, where the river basin covers an area of over 10,000 square kilometers in Quang Nam Province. The river which flows through Hoi An to the sea at the Cua Dai estuary, contributes to the traditional and historical heritage of the town, a popular fishing town. Visitors searching for a resort in Hoi An Vietnam located on the banks of Thu Bon River would love Anantara Hoi An Resort, which organizes romantic sunset cruises and an hourly ride along the river for its guests.
The banks of this river are clustered with craft centres such as Thanh Ha for pottery, Phuoc Kieu for bronze casting, Kim Bong for carpentry, Tra Que for vegetables, Ma Chau for silk, Phu Chiem for rice paper and Que Minh for conical hats. These centres reflects the daily lives of the locals and the Trung Phuoc floating market is known to be the busiest trading place in the region.
As this river is a popular fishing spot, visitors cruising along the river will be treated to the sights of locals casting huge fishing nets which can be raised and dropped by a system of ropes and bamboo rollers from small huts close to the river bank. Once the net is lifted, the fishermen use a long thin bamboo stick to get the fish out. The fishermen release the net back again to the river only to repeat the process. This is Vietnam’s most traditional way to catch fish and it is a popular tourist attraction!
The islets in the middle of the river are used by the locals to grow corn, peanuts or to raise ducks. The hustle and bustle of this river side town is great for the adventurous tourists who love to explore the culture and lifestyle of the locals.
The Thu Bon Goddess Festival is also hosted on the river on the 12th day of the second lunar month, where a water procession heads the festival.
