Tirta Empul Water Temple is known for its holy spring water that sprouts through its walls. The spring water is known to feed purification baths, fish ponds and pools around the temple complex, all of which eventually flow to the Tukad Pakerisan River. The temple has been marked as a national cultural heritage site, as it was built circa 960 AD. The temple has also stood against the test of time and through the years of the old kingdoms of Bali, such as the Warmadewa Dynasty.
The large rectangle pool carved from stone with 12 fountains around it is probably the main attraction of the temple. Worshippers first make an offering here before bathing from the holy waters of the pool, which is known to purify them. The bathing ritual starts by bathing from the waters of the first spout and then proceeding to the rest. Some even collect the water in bottles to take back home. Non worshippers can also bathe from the holy spring waters, however do keep in mind that the water flowing from the last two spouts are kept for the purification of oneself after funeral rites have been performed.
