A Landmark for a Landmark Event

As one of the most recognisable monuments in all of Bali, the Bajra Sandhi Monument was erected to commemorate the struggle to overthrow Dutch colonial rule on the island. Depicting a rather momentous scene from the battle of 1906 with Dutch forces, the sculpture which features a Badung monarch is a dramatic testament to the bravery of the islanders.

Views Galore

The spiral staircase that leads up to this towering monument allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views across the island from its vaulted height. Those who are based at the POP! Hotel Teuku Umar Denpasar Bali or any other budget hotel in Bali will have easy access to the site.

Design Elements

The monument as a structure closely resembles a Bajra or a praying bell that’s frequently used by local monks. The rectangular shape of the structure follows the Tri-Mandala architectural principle to the letter, which means that the monument has a Utama Mandala (main structure), Madya Mandala (inner courtyard) and a Nista Mandala (outer courtyard). The main building or the Utama Mandala is three-storeys high with the ground floor containing exhibition halls, a library and administrative chambers.

History

Having opened its doors to the public in 2003, it is difficult to believe that the construction of the Bajra Sandhi Monument was completed back in 1987. The main focus of the monument is, of course, the 33 dioramas that cover the history of the island to its independence from colonial rule.
