The structure

Richmond Castle is a wonderful building with 2 storeys. Amazingly, inside the palace are 99 doors and 34 windows with beautiful glass paintings. Records state that the teak used to build the castle were imported from Burma.

Architecture and inspiration

Quite similar to an English mansion, this castle too has a grand dance hall with a stage. The interiors are full of delicate carvings and the timbre is said to be as fresh as the day it was built.

The gardens

The Mudaliyar who owned the place loved nature and therefore, the garden was once full of colourful flowers. There are many marble statues as well decorating the premises.

The palace today

Today the castle is an educational centre for the underprivileged kids in the area. But you can still visit and marvel at the surroundings. The attraction is just a short drive away from popular hotels in Kalutara the likes of Turyaa Kalutara Hotel.
