There are various places of interest to keep the tourists busy in Bangkok. One of the places of cultural importance is the Erawan shrine. Locally known as San Thao Maha Phrom; “Shrine of Lord Brahma the Great” is a Hindu shrine in the city. A popular place of worship and also often features traditional Thai dance performances, these dancers are hired by worshipers in return for their prayers being granted.
The shrine was built in 1956 in order to eliminate bad karma associated with the building of the Erawan hotel. The temple is dedicated to Lord Brahma; the statue of the god was designed by the department of Fine Arts and enshrined on the 9th of November 1956.
The statue was however vandalized by a Thai man in 2006, which left the temple with only photographs of the statue so that the temple activities could be carried out with no hindrance. Later that year the new statue was placed in the shrine.
There are other such shrines around the area such as Phra Laksami, Phra Trimurati, Phra Khanet, Phra In, and Phra Narai Song Suban. While in Bangkok there are various other activities to do such as visit the floating markets, the various malls as well as enjoy the Thai food.
