The island state of Tasmania sits off Australia’s south coast and its capital, Hobart is on the brink of a tourism boom. The charming locale is becoming popular for its local wines, waterfront bars and restaurants. Salamanca Place has recently become swanky with its old sandstone warehouses being renovated to hold galleries, pubs and cafes. Battery Point, Hobart’s oldest suburb with its narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages is minutes away from Somerset on the Pier Hobart, a charming property that overlooks the water. An invigorating hike or bike ride to the top of Mount Wellington will give you a bird’s eye view, one thousand two hundred and seventy meters above the city.
Another popular tourist spot in the city is The Queen’s Domain. Located on the banks of the stunning Derwent River, it is an eclectic leisure and recreation complex. The serviced apartments Hobart has to offer may appeal to families with young kids, much like the playground and picnic spots at the Domain. Several different sports facilities like Hobart International Tennis Centre, Hobart Aqua Centre, TCA Ground and Domain Athletic Centre are also housed within the premises.
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Garden takes up a large portion of The Queen’s Domain. The fourteen hectares were declared a horticultural venue in 1818 and is a leading attraction today. In addition to the wide variety of flowering plants and trees, the gardens are dotted with barbeque areas and picnic spots. The botanical garden also regularly plays host to local flower shows. Government House, overlooking the Derwent River is also a popular attraction that draws sightseers. The Soldier’s Memorial Avenue makes up another part of The Queens Domain. It is a walkway that was built in honour of the soldiers, mainly from Hobart, who died in World War One.
