Thailand is a well known tourist destination which is well-known among many countries for the extensive bargaining and negotiating tactics which are used in the majority of its markets and small shops. Along the streets are enthusiastic sellers of clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, cosmetics and toys. The strong Buddhist history adds value to the culture of the country.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the cities towards the Northern of Thailand is the ancient city of Chiang Mai. While you can reside in one of the many hotels in busy Bangkok when you come here on vacation, if you are looking for a more serene environment, hotels in Chiang Mai such as the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort or others in the area may be more suitable. As you drive into the jungle, the long-necked women in the hill villages will definitely grab your attention. On the way to your destinations a quick photo with these women is not to be missed.
Residents in Kayar were forced to flee Myanmar due to the civil war that took place 20 years ago. These refugees landed in Thailand’s Northern border. They have created their own villages and in these villages are women that belong to a certain tribe. They wear rings around their necks which make them appear to look longer, much like a giraffe’s neck. These coil-shaped gold colored rings are worn by these women around their necks, from the age of four or five years old. Starting with a minimum of two layers, as years go by, the number of layers is increased. These rings are said to bear down on the shoulders due to their weight, thus stretching the neck muscles in the process. Some of the women here continue to follow this tradition to this day, with the goals of earning income through attracting tourists. These women also engage in selling handmade crafts and clothes.
