It is only recently that the world is becoming truly aware of the rich history and heritage of Oman dating back to 4000 BCE. The country’s numerous desert and maritime settlements, ancient forts, castles and gates are a testament to its historic importance and the influence it wielded in the region. Nizwa Castle is one of these structures and is a reminder of a time when Nizwa was an important town and the castle was a bulwark that stood against invading forces, desiring the wealth of the area.
Although it is still among the largest fortified palaces in Oman, Nizwa Castle in its heyday was a vital link along a caravan route that connected the city to the interior. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle fort underwent a twelve year upgrade in the late 17th century that saw the addition of several novel architectural features. The citadel with its massive circular tower was meant to withstand mortar fire and to make a solid and suitably impressive impression on the enemy. The tower with a diameter of 35 metres rises 30 metres above the surrounding landscape; the 360 degree views presented from the top of the tower made it the ideal location for the 24 cannons that served as its main defence.
Additionally 480 gun ports and crenellations for the placement of 120 armed guards safeguarded it from intruders. Comprising of battlements, turrets, secret shafts, false doors, a series of wells, a maze of rooms, high ceilinged halls, secret passageways, narrow doorways and stair cases and terraces, it was a typical fortified castle of the time that used a range of sophisticated building elements to foil and surprise the enemy if they ever happened to enter the castle premises.
The castle is still very much a part of the life of the people of Nizwa being the place where regular meetings are held between the people and various government officials. The area below the castle becomes a bustling market during Eid. Farmers from the surrounding areas meet under the date palms to haggle over the prices of their livestock to be sold for the feasts.
