Sprawling across 60 hectares of wooded areas, paved walks, ornamental gardens and open lawns, Rizal Park is still popularly known as ‘Luneta’. Dotted with monuments dedicated to almost every Philippine hero, this historical urban park is nested at the centre of Philippines’ Manila. Having long been a favourite spot for family picnics, socializing and unwinding, this oasis is one of the leading attractions in the city of Manila.
Having witnessed some of the most significant incidents in the nation’s history, the park was named after the pacifist Dr. José Rizal, whose execution sparked the rebellion against the Spanish colonizers by Philippines. His monument at the park, a bronze-and-granite structure noted for being among the nation’s most famous sculptural landmarks, is a major attraction in its own right. Daily, hundreds of locals and foreign visitors flock to the park to simply unwind, play music, sing or take a stroll. A noteworthy occurrence which took place here is the Declaration of Philippine Independence which signifies the country’s freedom from American rule.
The site of Rizal’s execution can be found to one side of his monument. Recreating the last moments of his life are eight tableaux of life-size bronze statues which are part of a light-and-sound presentation held here at night. Quirino Grandstand, where the country’s presidents deliver their first address and take their oath of office, can be seen at the western end of the park. Fountains and the Central Lagoon dominate the centre of the park.
Visitors can take a stroll along the three ornamental gardens; the tropical Manila Orchidarium, the austere Japanese Garden and the whimsical Chinese Garden. A Chess Plaza can also be found within the park. Travellers in Manila can also visit other famous attractions such as Intramuros, Lawton Plaza, Japanese Garden and Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden.
