Formerly known as Lake Victoria, the Inya Lake is a man-made water body during the colonial era in Burma. Today it is a popular and quite a romantic spot to relax and unwind.
History
The artificial lake was constructed as a water reservoir in the year 1882 by the British to supply water to the former capital, Rangoon. The lake was constructed by joining small hills which surrounded the local creeks and waterways which form naturally during the annual south-east Asian monsoon which lasts for about 4 months.
Location
The lake and the surrounding recreational areas are located on Shwegondaing Road which is across the Ngahtatgyi Pagoda and lies to the northeast of Shwedagon Pagoda between the townships of Bahan -Tamwe. While the lake is very popular with young couples for date nights, a myriad of other activities are available as well to engage in while on a visit such as kayaking, sailing and golfing. The spot also hosts local sporting, dance and musical events as well.
