There’s one place in Kalutara that does not go unnoticed in the eyes of both locals and tourists. That is Richmond Castle. Want to know more about this historic location here?
1) The Basics
This is a century old country mansion that has an outward appearance resembling 19th-century British noble residences. The castle exudes a taste of grandeur from all its surrounding beauty as well as its exterior grounds. The mansion is pretty close to most hotels in Wadduwa Sri Lanka and is an excellent location to check out if you’re staying at any of them, such as Oak Ray Haridra Beach Wadduwa for example,
2) The Story
Owned by the Mudaliyar of the Kalutara District in the early 1900s named Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur De Silva Wijeysinghe Siriwardena, this mansion is a symbol of both splendour and power. The inspiration for it came from the palace of the Mudaliyar’s old school friend, the Maharaja of Ramnad from India.
3) The Architecture
The mansion is a perfect example of design fusion as it captures many details from both the East and the West. The mansion stands on 42 acres of land and contains 99 doors as well as 38 windows.
4) The Past and the Present
The mansion is now considered to be a monumental historic site, with the Public Trustee Department having opened it to the public.
