If an adventure is what you seek, Sri Lanka is the place to be! Why – you ask? With so many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries on the island, the ecosystem here is simply awe-inspiring! Wasgamuwa National Park is just one of these fantastic places.
The terrain
The park expands up to 36,900 hectares and is bordered by the flourishing rivers, Mahaweli Ganga and Amban Ganga in the east and west respectively. The Sudu Kanda mountain ranges offer thrilling hiking opportunities to those who wish to explore.
Wildlife at the park
The main attraction at this park is the herd of about 150 elephants that make the place home from November to May. Other animals you may be able to spot are the sambar deer, purple-faced langur monkeys, wild boar and more.
Ancient Ruins
The remains of reservoirs and temples tell us that the area was once an affluent village. Some of the ruins are said to be about 1800 years old and the reclining Buddha statue in Buduruwayaya is one of these relics.
Getting to the park
One way to get here would be to hop on a domestic flight with airlines like Cinnamon Airstraight to Sigiriya. From here the attractions is about approximately a 2-hour drive away.
