Sri Lanka is an island with many lakes, but few are iconic as Bolgoda. It is situated a short distance away from Colombo and is definitely worthy of a visit.


Bolgoda Lake is one of the most significant sources of fresh water to be found in the western district of Sri Lanka and is a result of the convergence of two major bodies of water. This massive lake measures 374km2 and has a varying depth of 20 to 50 feet.

There are more than 45 species of fish to be found in the lake, as well as 40 kinds of reptiles, and 31 species of mammals. Bolgoda Lake is also a famous bird watching destination since the area is rich in avifauna.

Historical Information

During the colonial days, Bolgoda Lake served as an easy means of transportation, in regards to goods as well as people. Since the lake is nourished by water coming from the Sinharaja Forest, it was used to transport timber from that region.
