Tipped to be the year’s most engaging family event, the annual Spring Festival at Souq Waqif not only welcomed visitors based in Souq Waqif boutique hotels and nearly every Doha boutique hotel in the vicinity but local families as well. The main attraction at this year’s event was undoubtedly the Dolphin Show which drew in large crowds of visitors from all across the city.
The marine showstoppers not only included dolphins, however, as seals and a charming white whale was also part of the spectacle hosted by a Russian troupe. Performing gravity-defying acrobatic feats the two dolphins not only let their athletic skill impress the onlookers as they also showcased their considerable talent in both dancing and singing. The dolphin duo that performed at the show was both three years of age although the one named Jehhad was a mere 6 months older than Echaro. The two-year-old seal and 4-year-old white whale also stole the hearts of the spectators who were fortunate enough to catch the event live.
Organized by the Aspire Academy the first show ran for an hour from 4 pm to 5 pm while the second took place at 7 pm and concluded at 8 pm. Three female acrobatic performers also took to the water to inspire the crowds and instruct their marine performance partners. This is the second time the dolphins and marine animals from the Aspire Academy have performed in Doha with their first performance having taken place back in 2015. Organizers were better prepared for the conditions of the arid landscapes of the city this time around as the dolphins had endured difficulties due to the warm and salty nature of Doha’s water in their first outing two years ago.
The Dolphin Show was only one of the many highlights that were aimed at families visiting the Spring Festival as many rides including Caterpillar, Extreme Swing, and Crazy Frog among others were set up at Al Ahmed Square as a part of the event. The alley containing the Souq on the other hand also had a range of performers including Alien Percussion, the Blue Drummers, and a Rainbow Parade in the days following the Dolphin Show.
