When one thinks of Paris, the first thing that comes to mind is the towering, iron lattice that is the Eiffel Tower. The history behind the magnificent tower goes back to 1887, when it was designed and built by French engineer, Gustave Eiffel, as a temporary exhibit for the 1889 World’s Fair. The platform on the third level is 906 ft high and is listed as the highest, public observation deck in the European Union. In 2017, a bulletproof glass wall, measuring nearly 3-metres high was erected around the tower, due to safety concerns. However, a visit to the base is still free to the public, once they pass through a security check. Parisians love their tower, and after a visit to this historic landmark, it’s not hard to see why.
