Also known as Nil Diya Pokuna, this pond is Ella is known for being the most magical and mysterious water pond in Sri Lanka.
About
The pond is housed inside a huge buckle, which lies about 500m under the ground, quite far from the surface of the Earth, and this factor alone adds the secrecy to this pond that looks like it’s out of a fantasy book, making it one of the top vacation destinations on the island.
Legend
When Ravana held Seetha captive, he had to hide her from the surface as Hanuman was on the lookout for her. He kept her under the ground for almost a year and due to this, she got a skin disease as she had no sunlight whatsoever. Ravana then created passages underwater, with underwater ponds and waterfalls that let her bathe and get some sunshine without being spotted by Hanuman.
How to get there
Many travel blogs have highlighted the ways to get there, like The Vacation Getaway, for instance, and the most popular way is to climb down a rope as the rocks are too steep.
What to expect
Once you reach the bottom, you’d find a passageway full of bat feces, so be careful; not to slip. After an arch and going down further, you will see the pond.
