No a whale shark is not the latest hybrid horror creature to hit the screens (though fans of “Sharktopus” may be disappointed!) but in actual fact a marine creature that swims the depths of the sea. Here are some fascinating facts that will help you get a better understating of whale sharks.
1. Something fishy!
Whale sharks are in actuality a fish and are not related to whales in any way. A kind of shark species, the term “whale” in its name is due to its huge size. In fact, they are considered the world’s largest species of fish.
2. Truly tropical
Tropical waters which are generally warmer are where you are most likely to see whale sharks. While you may not spot them while snorkelling say from water bungalows in Maldives, those on diving excursions to deeper waters have a chance to see and swim with these creatures.
3. Lots to brush
If a dentist ever had to give a dental check up to a whale shark it would take quite a long time to say the least; these species are known to have tiny teeth numbering around 3,000!
4. All the better NOT to eat you with!
Fear not, all these teeth are not used for eating! Whale sharks are known as filter feeders and suck in plankton and smaller fish as food. They are actually considered quite docile and can sometimes be spotted while on diving excursions in the Maldives from resorts such as Adaaran Club Rannalhi.
5. Home is where the mouth is
Female whale sharks produce eggs, but these young actually hatch within the mother’s mouth! While hatchlings number around 300 or so, most of them do not reach maturity.
