The origins

According to historical sources, the Kandy Perahera initiated during the rule of King Kirthisiri Meghawanna of the Anuradhapura Kingdom (305 – 331 AD). It was under the decision of the King that the Sacred Tooth Relic was taken around Anuradhapura once a year. In time, with the change of linage and many kings and kingdoms, the Sacred Tooth Relic reached Kandy which became its permanent home.

The purpose

This holy parade is held to pay respect to the Sacred Tooth Relic held in the Dalada Maligawa (known as The Temple of the Tooth Relic). Also, four Hindu Gods; Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Goddess Pattini are also venerated by the celebrations. The reason for the festival since ancient times have been to pray for rain.

The procession

The ceremonial escort of the religious relic begins on a full moon night in August. At this time the procession party of the Sacred Tooth Relic will lead the way followed by the procession devoted to God Natha, Next, the procession from the Shrine dedicated to God Vishnu, followed by the procession for the God of Katharagama.

Eyepopping performances

This is one of the most anticipated events in the country. Elephants are clad in the finest jewel speckled clothes of bright colours. Dancers representing several cultures can be seen, the Kandyan dancers, however, take the spotlight. Stilt walkers, jugglers and fireball stuntman add a sense of excitement. Many a Kandy hotel are usually reserved early by both locals and tourist as properties such as Earl’s Regent Kandy tend to be fully booked by this period.
