The Kandy Perahera refers to the significant Buddhist celebration of Esela Poya. Also known as the Esala Perehara, yearly religious pageant brings out the very crux of Sri Lankan culture.

The origins
According to historical sources, the Kandy Perahera initiated during the rule of King Kirthisiri Meghawanna of the Anuradhapura Kingdom (305 – 331 AD). It was under the decision of the King that the Sacred Tooth Relic was taken around Anuradhapura once a year. In time, with the change of linage and many kings and kingdoms, the Sacred Tooth Relic reached Kandy which became its permanent home.
The purpose
This holy parade is held to pay respect to the Sacred Tooth Relic held in the Dalada Maligawa (known as The Temple of the Tooth Relic). Also, four Hindu Gods; Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Goddess Pattini are also venerated by the celebrations. The reason for the festival since ancient times have been to pray for rain.
The procession
The ceremonial escort of the religious relic begins on a full moon night in August. At this time the procession party of the Sacred Tooth Relic will lead the way followed by the procession devoted to God Natha, Next, the procession from the Shrine dedicated to God Vishnu, followed by the procession for the God of Katharagama.
Eyepopping performances
This is one of the most anticipated events in the country. Elephants are clad in the finest jewel speckled clothes of bright colours. Dancers representing several cultures can be seen, the Kandyan dancers, however, take the spotlight. Stilt walkers, jugglers and fireball stuntman add a sense of excitement.
