One of the best natural attractions in Luang Prabang, Laos, the enchanting Kuang Si Waterfall is a destination for swimming, hiking, and wildlife encounters too. If you’re intrigued, read on to find out more!
Planning Your Visit
This waterfall is approximately 30 km from Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can be based at Avani+ Luang Prabang. Such properties organise convenient excursions which include a private cruise to the village of Ban Muang Khai from where you will be driven to the falls while a picnic lunch will be arranged as well. Alternatively, travellers can look to reach the site by tuk-tuk, car or motorbike / scooter.
A Scenic Spectacle
After you have settled down in your chosen hotel, Luang Prabang adventures can begin with a trip to this site; as you approach the waterfall, you’ll be struck by the beauty of the surrounding jungle. The lush vegetation provides a tranquil atmosphere, and the sound of the cascading water can be heard from a distance. As you continue, you will be greeted by the sight of natural pools with turquoise blue waters before you come to the main 50-metre-high Kuang Si Waterfall which flows down several tiers. After taking it in, change into your swimwear and enjoy a refreshing dip in one of the pools!
Other Things to Do
A popular thing to do here is to enjoy a picnic amidst such idyllic natural beauty. For more adventure, you can hike to the top of the waterfall which takes only around 15 to 20 minutes and provides lovely views of the surrounding area. If you’re interested in wildlife, be sure to visit the Asiatic bear sanctuary near the entrance to the waterfall which provides a safe and comfortable home for rescued bears. There’s also a butterfly park nearby where you can see a variety of colourful butterflies and learn about their life cycle.
When to Visit
Generally, the best period to visit the falls is from December to around April or May when there is a less likely chance of rain. While you can still head to this site during the monsoon season, from July to October, the pools of water may be murkier and not as beautiful at other times. Additionally, keep in mind that both locals and tourists often visit this attraction on weekends so the ideal time to head here is usually early in the morning on weekdays.
