One of Colombo’s most popular public areas, Galle Face Green can be found along the coast and offers plenty of space for both relaxation and recreation. If you are looking for a place to hang out or sample some of the city’s famed street food this is your spot!

A Bit of History
Galle Face Green was initially used by the Dutch for military purposes though the British subsequently transformed this area and used it for horse racing in the 1820s and later for golf! Nowadays it’s part of the modern cityscape close to many offices, hotels and apartments in Colombo, Sri Lanka including those of John Keells Properties.
Hanging Out
Galle Face Green is an ideal place to hang out with family, friends, that special someone or just by yourself. Since there’s not much shade, evening times are understandably more popular and since it’s by the beach you do get to witness some stunning sunsets too.
Things to Do
Kite flying is one of the most popular things to do here. It is also common to see families having picnics, kids involved in a game of tag and couples enjoying walks along the promenade or huddled under an umbrella for some privacy!
Foodie Delights
You will find several stalls along the promenade selling the popular ‘isso vade’, a deep fried prawn-based snack and ‘achcharu’ a concoction of raw fruit like mango or pineapple mixed with chilli powder, salt and vinegar. You can also try ‘kottu roti’ featuring chopped up godamba roti and a variety of veggies and meats.
