One of the most iconic temples in Bangkok, Wat Arun not only offers a stunning sight to take in but plenty to explore at its complex as well. Here’s a quick guide if you haven’t visited this attraction yet.
Planning a Visit
The temple is located along the west bank of the Chao Phraya River which provides an idyllic setting that lends to the site’s charm. You can easily reach the riverside locale from hotels like Jono Bangkok Asok and take river taxis or cruises that go past this temple for those quintessential Wat Arun photographs. To visit the complex itself, you can take a longtail boat tour which has a stop there or just use a Chao Phraya Express Boat.
The Central Spire
The distinctive feature of Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is its central spire which towers above the riverside reaching a height of around 82 metres. This Khmer-style spire dates to the 19th century and provides a spellbinding spectacle be it during the day or at night when it’s lit up. When at the temple on a visit from a Sukhumvit-based hotel in Bangkok city center, you can go up close to the spire and see how it’s been decorated with Chinese porcelain and colored glass.
Exploring the Site
Apart from viewing the temple, ensure you visit the complex to get a closer look at the various features of this sacred site including the striking Ordination Hall; here, amidst intricate designs and architecture, you will find the golden Niramitr Buddha Statue along with fascinating murals. As you continue your exploration of the compound, you will come across sculptures of Chinese warriors, another golden statue of the Buddha, Chinese pavilions, and more.
Keep in Mind
Remember, as at other temples in Thailand, you need to adhere to a strict dress code to enter Wat Arun. Wear attire that covers bare shoulders, legs, and the midriff; to help those who are unprepared, cover-ups can be rented near the site’s entrance too. Early morning is generally a good time to visit before the temple gets crowded and set aside around one to two hours to spend there. Make sure you also view this site at sunset when the backdrop is magical, to say the least.
