One of the key attractions in Hokkaido, Japan, the Otaru Canal is not to be missed on your visit and here is a glimpse into what to expect.
Getting There
This site is in the city of Otaru, around 10-15 minutes by foot from the JR Otaru Station and only a seven-minute drive from Grand Park Otaru which makes an ideal base for your sightseeing adventures. Apart from walking along the canal, you can look to hire a bicycle and explore the area. Those renting a car will find toll parking lots on offer nearby as well.
What to Expect
Dating to 1923, this canal was initially constructed to support the thriving shipping and trade industries with many warehouses being built beside the water. Those visiting from a nearby Otaru hotel can traverse the footpath along the canal and take in a truly enchanting sight including these distinctive warehouses that are now cafes, pubs, and museums. Don’t forget to also come here at night when over 60 gas lamps are lit along the promenade, completely transforming the area.
Other Highlights
You will come across some notable sites on your visit to the Otaru Canal; these include Chuo Bridge from which you can walk to another highlight, the Asakusa Bridge from where one can take some great pictures. You can also head to Canal Plaza where you will find a café and can get more information about the city, while the Northern Canal within easy reach of Chuo Bridge is an ideal place to see small boats.
