If you’re visiting Phuket, Thailand you must know that a visit to Big Buddha is a must. The marvellous marble statue sits atop Nakkerd Hill, Chalong looking over the island like a big guardian angel. Here are some things to remember if you’re planning a visit.
The best time to visit
The statue is open to the public from 6.00 Am to 7.00 Pm daily. You can catch the ethereal glow of the first rays of sun shining on the city below if you arrive at the peak at around 6.15 Am. As the statue is only an hour’s drive from luxury villas for sale such as the likes of Avadina Hills by Anantara, the early start leaves you with plenty of time to see the rest of the island as well.
What to wear
Although this is a major tourist destination, it is also a temple where monks reside and conduct various religious activities. It is a sacred site to the Thais so please make sure you wear modest clothing covering your knees, arms, legs and shoulders. Your clothes are inspected at arrival and if by any chance you fail to meet the criteria you will be provided with a shawl or cloth to cover up.
Getting there and parking
The roads to the Big Buddha are well maintained so it is easiest to drive there. There is a car park on-site and it’s both convenient and safe. If you are concerned about parking even in the slightest its best to avoid crowded times; the earliest in the morning and close to closing time are usually less crowded than the rest of the day.
Places to eat
There are street food vendors all over the entrance selling delicious treats to satisfy your hunger pangs. However, the real treat is to stop at a panoramic sea view restaurant up on Nakkerd Hill. They’re impossible to miss and serve fresh food with the most breathtaking views. Speaking of food, please do not feed the monkeys as the groundkeepers work so hard to keep them from harming the visitors.
