Hidden in the verdant green hills of Koh Samui, the Secret Buddha Garden has a mystical aura that delightfully contrasts the busy touristy atmosphere of the island. Getting here is a bit of a challenge, but if you manage to get here, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful sights and the aroma of exotic flowers. The garden is steeped in charming tranquillity.
History
Located about half an hour from Santiburi Koh Samui, the Secret Buddha Garden has a history going back to 1976. The garden was built by a local farmer, Nim Thongsuk, who wanted to turn Koh Samui into a desirable tourist destination. He employed several architects to work in the garden.
What to see
The Secret Buddha Garden has become one of the most visited tourist attractions on the island; if you decide to stay at a Koh Samui resort, you are most likely to be offered a tour package that includes a visit to the garden. The sculptures of deities and animals that dot the garden are the main attraction, but you can also see the stunning panorama of the region from here.
Getting here
The best way to get here is to join a guided tour, or you can get your hotel to arrange a tour for you. You can visit the garden any time you want, and the entrance fee is 80 Baht. You don’t need to dress modestly, but clothing that doesn’t contradict the traditional values of the island is advised.
