Being the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest in the world, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has established an incredible presence in Abu Dhabi. Named after the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the mosque has been opened for worship since December 2007.
The design of the Mosque is quintessentially a fusion of Arab, Mughal and Moorish architecture. The Badshahi Mosque in Lahore and the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca in particular had significant impact on the design of the mosque.
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque can accommodate up to 40000 worshippers at one time, with the main prayer hall holding up to 9000 worshippers. The mosque contains four minarets on the four corners of the mosque which ascend up to 377 ft. There are also 57 domes which cover the outside yard along with the main building.
