While Sri Lanka is famed for sun-kissed beaches, do you know the island is also home to mist-shrouded mountains! Known as the “Hill Country” this enchanting region has several key destinations each offering captivating adventures.
Kandy
The Hill Capital, Kandy, was the last ancient Sri Lankan Kingdom and is where you will find the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is no surprise, local travel specialists such as Nkar Travel House offer tours to Kandy where you can also visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, the Udawattakele Forest Reserve and the Kandy Lake.
Ella
Probably the island’s most happening Hill Country destination at present, Ella is particularly popular with travellers heading to Sri Lanka. Tour packages often include this town in their itinerary giving you the chance to trek up Mini Adam’s Peak, hike to the Nine Arch Bridge and explore idyllic tea plantations on the mountains.
Nuwara Eliya
This city is known as “Little England” and for good reason; apart from its cool climate you will also find many colonial style bungalows that give it a feel of being a country village in Britain. The scenic Hakgala Botanical Garden, Victoria Park and Moon Plains are well worth a visit as is Gregory Lake.
Bandarawela
Amidst the breathtaking mountain panoramas of Bandarawela, you can head to such sites of interest as the Adisham Bungalow which functions as a monastery. The Church of the Ascension and the Dowa Buddhist Temple are also key attractions as is the nearby Diyaluma Waterfalls.
