Give yourself a historical treat by visiting the oldest museum in the thrilling city of Al Ain in Abu Dhabi. Located next to the Sultan fort, on the east side of the vastest oasis in Al Ain, it is an illuminating adventure awaiting those eager minds.
The museum was constructed by the past President of UAE, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and opened by Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, the ruler’s representative in the Eastern Region during the year 1971. It is divided into two parts classified as Ethnographic and Archaeological features of the nation, particularly relating to the city of Al Ain. The Ethnographic section mainly exhibits the pre-oil history of the country which has declined and consists of a display of their lifestyle and past time activities. In comparison, the Archeological section contains items that had been discovered from Stone Age through to the Islamic Period. Take a stroll around this museum and get an idea about the heritage and culture of the ancient people of the country. It also includes artifacts and items that were found from Bronze Age tombs discovered at the Hili Archaeological Park.
You will also be able to find an individual display that presents the history and construction of Falaj which is the system used to manage water via subterranean channels. This system was introduced to this area during the Iron Age. Furthermore, the beautiful pottery collection used in the 3rd century is displayed to present the comparison between these ancient times and the Hellenistic Era. Apart from this, for those coin lovers and collectors, be delighted to explore the variety of coins from different ages, which includes a collection of about three hundred silver coins that were used during the 17th century. These coins were found accidentally and were stored in a small jar near the city. Additionally, visitors can also spot porcelain which is centuries old and imported from China along with pottery.
