Home to a multicultural society, Abu Dhabi is one of the largest cities in the United Arab Emirates. Boasting a rich history, this ancient city is a mix of both tradition and modernity and offers visitors a truly fascinating sightseeing adventure. Among the many attractions one can visit while on holiday here are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Al Ain Wildlife Park, Al Hosn Palace, The Corniche and not forgetting Ferrari World, the world’s first Ferrari theme park. Those interested in history and learning more about the region’s rich heritage should also make time to visit Al Jahili Fort.
Located close to the Al Ain Palace Museum in Al Ain City, Al Jahili Fort is one of the country’s biggest forts and offers a unique insight into traditional architecture and design. Used for both protection and as a royal summer residence, the origin of this impressive structure goes back to the late 19th century.
Construction of Al Jahili Fort first began in 1891 under the patronage of Sheikh Zayed the First and the structure was completed in 1898. Since it was near water resources, the fort proved to be an ideal place for military and residential purposes and offered sanctuary to those around Al Ain Oasis. During the 1950s, British forces took over the fort and utilised it for the Trucial Oman Levies.
The fort has two buildings which are a part of the original structure and features a square shaped courtyard and a round shaped tower. This historic site is also home to an ancient mosque and a building that was used by the Sheikh to receive guests. Another significant feature at the site is a poem that can be found near the courtyard’s main entrance, dedicated to the fort’s founder, Sheikh Zayed the First. Visitors will also find a café, shop and information centre here as well.
