Al Masmak- the meaning
Al Masmak, according to the Arabic language means a building that’s high, thick, and strong. Just as its name suggests, Al Masmak is a citadel made up of clay and mudbrick spanning across a vast area of land.
The historical facts
This fortress has been built in 1865. This was home to the garrisons of the city until King Abdulaziz Al Saud captured the fortress and launched a raid. He began conquering and uniting the kingdoms by first capturing this fortress.
The fortress- today
It became a prison then, but today it’s a popular tourist attraction. Located very close to expatriates flats in Riyadh the likes of Ascott Rafal Olaya Riyadh, this fortress also lets you enjoy moments at its newly built museum.
