A forty five minute to one hour drive from Abu Dhabi on the Liwa road will take you to one of the most extraordinary sights and collections in the UAE.
As a private collection of former UAE ruler Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan , the Emirates National Auto Museum has a spectacular array. With its own workshop situated behind the enormous pyramid like museum structure, most of the over 200 vehicles exhibited are road worthy and in fact are still used from time to time. All vehicles housed within the museum are in excellent condition.
The vehicles on exhibit are mainly manufactured in the 1950 – 1990 era and include mini’s, coupe’s, Mercedes, convertibles, vans, SUV’s, jeeps, military vehicles and much more. Whilst some are in their original and intended condition others have been modified beyond belief. A stunning example of this would be the five foot dodge power wagon truck modified to accommodate an entire apartment within its confines which includes four bedrooms!
A trademark exhibit however would be the seven custom made Mercedes limousines. Each of these seven cars is painted a color of the rainbow not only on their exterior but the interior as well. Apart from these certain other vehicles too carry a rainbow motif around it.
Next to an impressive collection of large model European and American make cars are the mini’s. These, together with the racing car collection are top favorites. Some of these vehicles too have been refitted with larger model chassis’ and vice versa.
There is also a collection of classic cars that are truly beautiful in the manner in which they have been maintained.
Although the drive may prove to be somewhat long, a visit to the Emirates National Auto Museum is certainly worth it even if you are not a motor fanatic. Visitors of all ages will never fail to be amazed at the vastness of the collection as well as the ingenuity of certain modifications.
