Tucked away amidst mist-shrouded mountains near Bandarawela, the enchanting town of Ella in Sri Lanka offers captivating things to do; here are some of the best!
Hike Up Mountains
Those who love hiking can make their way up Mini Adam’s Peak near Ella town; it’s a relatively modest hike (around 90 minutes both ways) offering amazing views from the summit. For something more challenging, you can hike up Ella Rock (around four hours both ways) where more spellbinding vistas await.
Head to Ravana Fallsa
Ravana Falls is within easy reach of Ella and properties like Bandarawela Hotel; in fact, visiting this stunning site is also amongst the best things to do in Bandarawela. This 25-metre waterfall and its cave are linked to tales from the Indian epic, the Ramayana, and features three tiers and pools where you can have a dip as well.
Visit the Nine Arch Bridge
Located between the Demodara and Ella train stations, the aptly named Nine Arch Bridge is a sight worth seeing. Part of the fun is getting to a suitable vantage point which involves walking beside the tracks; the bridge which was constructed only from cement and stone is great to photograph too especially when a train goes over it.
Enjoy Views from Lipton’s Seat
Those based in Ella (or Bandarawela) can plan a morning excursion to Lipton’s Seat; this is a viewpoint where famed tea planter, Sir Thomas Lipton, used to survey the surrounding areas. The site is around 1,970 metres above sea level and once there, you will be rewarded by mesmerising panoramas of tea estates and mountains.
