Sri Lanka may be relatively small, but you will be hard-pressed to find such a range of experiences all within one island. Here are some of the highlights.
World Heritage Sites
The country has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites to discover; these include Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura with their archaeological treasures, the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Galle’s old town and fort. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve near The Rainforest Ecolodge – Sinharaja is a natural wonder that’s part of this list as well.
Flora and Fauna
The island is also blessed with rich biodiversity. Those staying at a Sinharaja eco lodge Sri Lanka has to offer can witness endemic flora and fauna including trees, animals and birdlife within the Sinharaja Forest. The country’s national parks such as Yala, Minneriya and Wilpattu are ideal to see leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, toque macaques and more.
Scenic Beaches
The picturesque beaches of Sri Lanka are famed the world over including Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Bentota (water sports hub) on the south coast. The west coast beach of Negombo and the east coast beaches of Pasikuda and Arugam Bay (surfing hotspot) are not to be missed either.
Mountain Hideaways
Head inland and you will soon find yourself amidst the mountains. The Sacred City of Kandy (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its Temple of the Tooth is a key attraction here as are destinations the likes of Nuwara Eliya and Ella. For some adventure, you can look to explore tea estates, trek up mountains and enjoy some “waterfall hopping” too!
