The Negombo region has some very interesting attractions, especially where coastal splendour is concerned, but one place you definitely shouldn’t miss out on is the Angurukaramulla Temple.
Background
There are fewer temples in Negombo due to the area’s Catholic majority, and the Angurukaramulla Temple has the most prominent of these. If you’re staying at one of the many Negombo beach hotels found along the coast, such as Amagi Aria, be sure to visit the temple.
Murals, Paintings and Pictures
One of the most prominent hallmarks of the temple are her various murals and images that depict the life of the Buddha and many stories from Buddhism known as the Jataka Tales. There are also many life-size images of the great kings that ruled Sri Lanka.
The Stupa within the Stupa
Much like most Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, there’s a stupa situated at the Angurukaramulla Temple, which is accessible by a bronze staircase. Interestingly, the staircases are flanked by two massive lions, also made of bronze.
The Ancient Library
The temple also contains the ruins of an ancient library that was built somewhere around three hundred years ago. The moss-covered ruins are easily-accessible and a good way to explore the nation’s heritage.
