Here are some of the architectural wonders in Colombo that are worth a visit for those with an eye for architectural detail.
The Dutch Hospital
Located just 5 minutes away from Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, this is a charming shopping precinct housed in what was formerly a 17th-century Dutch colonial hospital. It is now one of the oldest buildings in the Colombo Fort area and features cobblestone courtyards, where visitors flock to enjoy the restaurants, cafes and bistros on the premises. At night, the precinct features live music and dance performances that add a vibrant atmosphere to the area.
Independence Square
This impressive monument was built to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence from British rule which was achieved in 1948. It features an assembly hall that was inspired by the royal court of a Kandyan King and is adorned with several markers and icons that reflect Sri Lanka’s identity, including traditional statues, ponds, fountains and gardens. Visiting the Independence Square is one of the more popular things to do near Colombo, with joggers and outdoor enthusiasts often frequenting the site.
Jami Ul Alfar Mosque
This historic landmark, also known as the Red Mosque is commonly known for its striking red and white brick exterior that resembles a candy cane. It was built in 1909 and features a blend of several architectural styles including Indo-Islamic, Neoclassical and Gothic.
Gangaramaya Temple
This historic Buddhist temple dates back to the 19th century when it was established by Don Bastien, a well-known shipping trader at the time. The temple’s structure combines traditional and modern architecture which includes a relic chamber, the Simamalka Shrine and several colourful statues of the Buddha.
St Lucia’s Cathedral
Located in Kotahena, this Roman Catholic Cathedral was established in 1881 and is dedicated to St Lucia. It features numerous statues of Catholic saints with a unique Gothic architectural style. It is considered to be the oldest and largest cathedral in Sri Lanka.
