Maimi is well known for its beach and party culture but it is also home to The Bass Museum of Art. The museum was founded by the city of Miami in 1963 on the site that previously housed the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center. The first collection consisted of five hundred works of Renaissance and Baroque art donated by collectors John and Johanna Bass. The permanent pieces on display today include European paintings and sculptures dating back to the fifteenth century. Artefacts include textiles and tapestries from as early as the seventh century. The modern and contemporary displays lay a bigger focus on the art and architecture closer to home. The Linderman Lindemann Family Creativity Center was opened in January 2012. The center works to foster learning and development through its art classes, workshops and family days.

The Bass Museum of Art hosts a series of contemporary exhibitions throughout the year with programmes to complement the art on display, ranging from educational to concerts, running alongside. Live music, food and outdoor entertainment contributes to the lively atmosphere that draws large crowds. The Art Basel is a yearly highlight which brings together art lovers, private collectors and museums from the area in what is essentially a grand celebration that shines the spotlight on Miami.
